I have recently indulged myself in a life long but unacknowledged activity – doodling. As I’ve gone through stages of my life, I never paid notice to the fact that while on a phone call or in a boring lecture I would gravitate towards doodling. Decades later, glancing through whatever remains of time spent reading text books or taking notes on “paper” I find the evidence there. I doodled. Recently, feeling stress over some work issues I decided to embrace this, to celebrate it and to doodle more often.
Whereas in many areas of my life I am subject to evaluations of what i’m doing, I have made a concerted effort to avoid criticizing myself. My goal is to meditate as I doodle. If someone likes or dislikes the results, I hope to be indifferent.
One thing I’ve noticed is that others doodling with the same purpose produce work much like my own. It is at once unique and not unique. I’ll be looking deeper into into this phenomenon in the future. For now, it’s time to stop typing and pick up a pen!
I recommend those of you latent doodlers do the same. If you like, you can submit your work here and I will publish it as long as it follows guidelines for good netiquette.
